Research Community “Future of Education – Advancing Quality and Innovation in School and Higher Education”
The Research Community “Future of Education – Advancing Quality and Innovation in School and Higher Education” brings together the diverse expertise in the field of educational research within the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr). The aim is to further develop this expertise as part of a joint research and development strategy, thereby providing new impetus for educational sciences.
The three locations – Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund University, and the University of Duisburg-Essen – contribute different, complementary areas of focus. These include teaching and learning research, subject didactics, and education monitoring. This constellation enables educational science issues to be researched holistically and interdisciplinarily – from the fundamentals of learning to social contexts.
Research Community Topics
The research focuses cover a broad spectrum—from the micro level of data collection to the macro level of social developments. Research is conducted on current and future challenges in the following areas:

Cooperation and perspectives
The close networking of the three UA Ruhr locations and their geographical proximity create ideal conditions for innovative research cooperation and effective transfer into educational practice. The focus is on:
- Expanding disciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation within the UA Ruhr
- Developing international research cooperation
- Establishing further cross-location joint activities
The participants come primarily from key disciplines in educational research, such as education, psychology, subject didactics, and sociology.
Goals and mission statement
Together, we are reshaping education—innovative, interdisciplinary, and future-oriented. The research community contributes to the national and international visibility of UA Ruhr research.
A central element is a clear commitment to:
- Transfer – for example, into practice in schools, teacher training and continuing education
- Science communication – to make research results visible and socially effective
It strengthens the framework conditions through the shared use of research infrastructure and research data management and offers scientists in the early stages of their careers an inspiring environment.
